87 Lamest Moments in Tech (2000-2009)

IKEA's Sign is Tech FAIL!As the 2000s come to a close, we’re forced to reflect on the last time years by New York Times, Washington Post, and the 12.6 million other results on Google. I’d like to turn your attention to the 87 lamest moments in technology over the decade as told by Harry McCracken on Technologizer.

McCracken goes through each year giving four or five–or more, if the year merits it–blunders in the technology industry. Here’s a few of my favorites: the well-known and over anticipated Y2K bug (well over $300 billion was spent in the US in preparation–something McCracken didn’t cover) (2000); the “most epic fails in the dotcom bubble fiasco” WebVan (2001); proposed banning of Gmail by California State Senator Liz Figueroa citing unacceptable privacy invasions from Gmail scanning messages to show relative advertisements (2002); scandalous activity by the chairwoman of HP (2006); flop of Facebook Beacon (2007); and the falls of CompUSA and Circuit City in 2007 and 2009, respectively.

These stories will make you laugh, cry, and wonder ‘wtf?!’ but all in all I think the 2000s were a very exciting year. It caught the remnants of the dot-com boom, held the housing bubble (and bust) in its full glory, and watched the US become the sole subsidiary of China. (Just kidding about that last part–or am I?) What do you remember from it?
