Homemade Gummies!
Oh how I loved gummy bears growing up. The taste was rather gross and the texture was either extremely sticky or powdery (the more expensive gummies had a powder coating presumably so they wouldn’t stick together so much)… But I still adored the rare moments I had with gummy bears. I don’t remember the name of the brand I used to love so much, but I’m sure it can be found at a Cracker Barrel store or in one of those decade candy boxes (I was born at the beginning of the 90s, so we can count me as an 80s-90s cusp kid, I suppose).
Cindy at Skip To My Lou offers a fast and easy recipe for homemade gummies.
What you need:
- 1 3oz box of flavored gelatin. (My personal favorite is strawberry banana. Mmm.)
- 2 ¼oz packages of unflavored gelatin. (Gross, but necessary.)
- Corn starch. (If you want to powder your gummies.)
- Appropriate amount of water for gelatin mixtures.
- Candy molds. (Can be found at some groceries stores, Walmart, Target, other big named “supercenters”, and most craft stores like Hobby Lobby or Michael’s.)
(Author’s note: This recipe and accompanying images are from Skip To My Lou. I’ve just rearranged the text into a readable numbered list so that a fail cook like myself can successfully make these.)
What to do:
- Place one-third cup of water into a saucepan.
- Sprinkle both the flavored and unflavored gelatin powders over the water. (As noted in the original blog entry, “[if] you like chewier gummi candy add in another packet of unflavored gelatin.”)
- Allow to sit for three to five minutes. (Yes, without heat. I searched for nearly half a minute for the answer to “with heat?!”)
- Place the sauce pan over medium heat and stir the water-gelatin mixture until all has dissolved which can take as little as two minutes or as much as five minutes.

- Take the sauce pan off the heat and allow to cool for about a minute.
- Pour mixture into a container which makes it easy to pour the mixture. (The Skip To My Lou writer recommends a ceramic bowl.)
- Pour the mixture into its final resting place: the molds. (Apparently, the deeper the mold, the better for this particular activity.)
- Allow the gelatin to cool completely, which takes about twenty minutes. (If you’re really impatient, the writer says you can stick them in the the fridge for ten or so minutes.)
- Lightly sprinkle the backs with corn starch.
- Peel them from the molds. (Don’t worry about being gentle. Don’t you remember how hard it was to rip a gummy bear into two pieces?)
I hope you enjoy this snack as much as I’m sure I will… Whenever I get around to making it…
- Logan
