On March 19th, California Governor Gary Newsom orders all California residences to shelter in place “until further notice.” This is the strictest lockdown currently in effect in America covering a state of nearly 40-million people.
Violations of the order come with misdemeanor penalties. Despite the order, “a small number of people in California are still playing basketball, hanging out together on beaches and congregating in parks,” said the Politico article.
Newsom said the order is indefinite but doesn’t expect it to last “many, many months.”
According to the US tracker as of today, California reports 1,042 positive cases and 38 deaths. This accounts for 7% of all cases and 35% of all deaths within the US.
